Animated Branding Reel 2024

It’s 2024!

I am updating my showreels, website, portfolio and online presence. First, my updated Animated Branding reel.

The term “animated branding” encompasses logo animations, idents, movie logos, lower thirds, bumpers, lockups and more.

I also produce animated icons and UI/UX features.

Animated branding can be deployed on YouTube, TV, social media, streaming platforms and more. We live in the age of motion, not print: if you have a logo, you need an animated version, too!

My one-stop service includes sound licensing & sound design (let’s talk!). Finally, I can advise and ref those who have no identity or logo at all, although I am not a logo designer per say (different career!)

Norma, by Emily Munster

Norma, written & directed by Emily Munster (Room Seven Films) can currently be seen on the Directors Notes YouTube channel. Embed below.

Norma is a black comedy about an elderly couple celebrating a birthday.

After watching the short, you can read an interview with Emily on the Directors Notes website, here, which gives good insight into the production.

Emily is currently working on her next film End of January, which concerns children and is not a comedy.

I am proud to have contributed VFX to Norma. I attached cyber cake to Norma’s face in wide and mid shots. Tracking was very difficult (no tracking markers, non planar surface, long duration, “low” apparent contrast). My hybrid solution involved Lockdown for AE, some point tracking, and a bit of mesh warping.

You can follow Room Seven Films on instagram here.

Security Camera TVC

I produced the 3D sequence shown in ~two days for an agency. I was pleased to hit the deadline. I used After Effects and Element3D, not Cinema4D or Octane.

I was given a clean plate of a brick wall and window and a 3D version of the security camera. The 3D asset was not useable and the base footage had challenging properties. Among other things, the plate was shot on an anamorphic lens which made matching (with Element) very difficult for me.

E3D enabled rapid look development, and I couldn’t have done this without it, but I did struggle with it’s limitations. The final animation and camera move have their shortcomings, including aliasing. In a completely ideal world, I would’ve done this in another program and refined the camera move, assets and materials.

With all that being said, I got this turned in and the TVC aired, so here it is.

Agency was Brave Spark.

Zalando 360 Scene | 360 VR Render (C4D & Octane)

A 360 experience is one in which the user can look around them in a rendered environment. I have contributed to the creation of several, and this is one of them. The breakdown demonstrates my 3D work in a more general sense.

I created (modelled, textured, lit) and rendered this outdoor 3D scene for use within a 360 / VR experience. I used Octane and Cinema4D. I am happy to provide 3D solutions to clients and agencies alike (I can work freelance or work in-house for larger projects like this). I use C4D & Octane for all of my work.

The designer on this job was Andrea Philippou (http://andyandsimon.co.uk/), and the agency I worked for and with was Brave Spark.

The render I created is used in an interactive 360/VR feature, which I believe is updated every year. It can be experienced on any device: a VR headset is not required. Interactivity, not shown, includes hotspots and embedded content. The scene shown in this breakdown video is slightly different to the scene given to the client, reflecting some personal preference.

Petrichor | Animated GIF Comic

I have completed a short personal project, which is an adaptation of a comic titled Petrichor.

I took an original comic by illustrator & friend Jenny Allen and added movement to each panel, creating a suite of animated GIFs. You can click on the image below or here to check out my version of Petrichor.

I made some adjustments to the comic out of necessity, but tried to respect the original work. I used After Effects and Illustrator, and went to some lengths to make my bespoke work match her art style.

June & July Availability

Note to all clients:

This is an update on my current situation to help clients manage their work with me. As I’ve been unwell for a few weeks now I feel it is appropriate to provide more information.

Ideally, I’d be running at 100% by now but this is obviously not the case, and I am running slow and late on many projects.

Although I have shared my doctors note with clients individually – which is valid until 18th – there may be disruption beyond that.

Situation:

During 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, I had pulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis as part of an unusual period of illness, which was treated successfully. Image from records at bottom of page, more evidence can be provided by request.

Tuberculosis can affect any part of the body and it can recur. My case was unusual, but extensive. I contracted it from a Polish co-worker (proven with contact tracing).

In May[edited!] of this year, I became mysteriously unwell again.

Doctors believe that it has shown up again in my bladder, urinary tract and so on. This is known as GUTB. GUTB can show up a decade after the initial infection. This has not been confirmed, but it is their current avenue of investigation.

My current condition is disabling. During recent investigations, doctors found a heart issue of sorts, which is being treated well. However, I am keen to manage stress for the time being.

TB is difficult to diagnose, and tests takes time. The reason they do not treat pre-emptively is because the drugs used to destroy TB are harmful in their own right. I am currently in the midst of treatments and investigations, which take time. The medicines used in the interim are also tiring in their own right.

Outlook

I am doing my best to honour my commitments, I ask all clients to bear with me.

This has likely been going on for some time as I have struggled with vague, unfamiliar issues of fatigue.

Doctors note is below. Excerpt of my history of TB is below. I am being treated at New Victoria Hospital and Kingston Health Center intermittently.

My current plan is to continue working, and ultimately get this sorted. However, clients must temper their expectations.

TB itself is generally treatable and the form being investigated is not infectious to others.

Thank you for your understanding.

Documentary Title Sequence

Here is a title sequence I created for a feature length documentary about famous violins and a famous violinist. This is an alternative version of the title sequence that was used in the film. To avoid licensing issues I’ve edited this showreel version to a royalty free track. I added particle effects as a matter of personal preference. Again: the version in the film proper is different.

Information about the film can be found below the embedded video. You can read about the title sequence itself in the video description on Vimeo.

2021 Music Video VFX & 2,000,000+ Views

I was asked by an agency to work on a music video for Royal Blood, which has now been viewed more than 2 million times. Below is a breakdown of some cleanup work I did. Not all of my contributions are included in the reel below; I may produce another VFX reel in the near future with more breakdowns.

The VFX work shown was produced using After Effects and Mocha and if you click thru to the video you can read an in depth breakdown of the work involved in the video description on my Vimeo channel.

Please contact me if you need VFX services for your short or feature project. I also accept white label work.

2020 Animations & Projects

2020 was an unusual year to say the least. Below are some of the projects I worked on which I’m at liberty to show here!

The first is an ad spot for an eco friendly health and beauty product, which I cut against a fast-paced track. I worked with copy provided by the client. My role was to take the copy provided by the client and take it all the way thru to the finished product. Several variations of the animation were produced for different ad runs and the product line and brand continue to perform well.

I’ll be updating my portfolio thru early February with longer writeups and more recent work like this.
