Petrichor | Animated GIF Comic

I have completed a short personal project, which is an adaptation of a comic titled Petrichor.

I took an original comic by illustrator & friend Jenny Allen and added movement to each panel, creating a suite of animated GIFs. You can click on the image below or here to check out my version of Petrichor.

I made some adjustments to the comic out of necessity, but tried to respect the original work. I used After Effects and Illustrator, and went to some lengths to make my bespoke work match her art style.

2021 Music Video VFX & 2,000,000+ Views

I was asked by an agency to work on a music video for Royal Blood, which has now been viewed more than 2 million times. Below is a breakdown of some cleanup work I did. Not all of my contributions are included in the reel below; I may produce another VFX reel in the near future with more breakdowns.

The VFX work shown was produced using After Effects and Mocha and if you click thru to the video you can read an in depth breakdown of the work involved in the video description on my Vimeo channel.

Please contact me if you need VFX services for your short or feature project. I also accept white label work.

VFX work

I’m currently working on VFX for director Jesse McAnally. Tasks include gunfire work & insertion of crystal ball containing changing messages. Small job but surprisingly challenging.

The Grand Tour

I am currently (mis) directing a dramatization of the Voyager mission of 1970s/1980s fame. I am working on music & post production & visual effects (ongoing!)

It is an ambitious project for me and I’ve been working on it for quite a while. More to follow.

BAFTA Long Listed, The Listener Short FIlm

Hello. A short film I was involved in (VFX Supervisor) has been BAFTA long listed. My role included the realization of an invisible character who interacts with her environment, portrayed by Dame Harriet Walsh. Other tasks included set extension, matte work and cleanup.

I had absolutely no idea what I was doing but somehow I winged it and got away with it.

“Long-listed for a BAFTA in 2016, The Listener is a dystopian sci-fi starring Amit Shah (Black Mirror, The Hundred Foot Journey) and Dame Harriet Walter (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Babel).”

Directed by Michael Gilhooly. David Wright was Director of Photography. More cast/crew information available on the film’s website.

Standing On Enceladus

A short film made as a learning and fun experience. The film stars Alan Wallace & Parry Glasspool among others credited. Budget was £4,500, self funded (never again!). Shot on a Cannon T2I for the “digital” GoPro look, re: first person experience.

Stephen van Vurren, Director of the upcoming IMAX experience “In Saturn’s Rings” commented that the film was a “fun” short, which is great.

Thumbs

The final shot includes an Apollo era lander. The inclusion of a real element is intended to ground the shot and give it real texture. The frost detail was created by shining a torch thru a washing machine, filmed with the same camera and lens as the rest of the footage for consistency.

The Listener, Directed by Michael Gilhooly; Trailer & Poster

BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE LISTENER, LONDON, ENGLAND, 06/04/2014

The film The Listener is almost done. Below, you can catch the film’s official trailer. The film was directed by Michael Gilhooly. My role was VFX Supervision on set thru VFX work in post.

“In a society where every word that’s spoken is subject to surveillance, Jeremy is one of the best Listeners in the business, even if his dedication to his work leads him to a life of solitude. But just as he’s earmarked for promotion, a beguiling and mysterious woman joins his team, and he’ll have to choose between his loyalty to the Directorate, and the possibility of forging a connection with someone.”

Also, while I’m blogging about my work with Good Shout (production team), I also did VFX on this short film (I worked up the shot where the baby shoots the woman). You can check it out below. In the words of someone else “The Hounds of Babylon was not only Judges’ Pick in Rode’s international short film competition but also landed a top 10 spot in two of the categories! A great result considering there were 1200 entries!”.
